Europeans will have a digital identity by 2030
The European Commission initiated, in June 2021, a revision process of the eIDAS Regulation, which governs electronic identification and trust services. This revision aims to extend the protection of users of online services and ensure the reliability of the parties involved in a digital transaction throughout the European territory, correcting previous mistakes that have led to fragmentation between countries, thanks to the implementation of common solutions that are truly interoperable. Objective 2030: citizens with a digital identity.
The digitization of human activities is indisputable, whether we are talking about e-commerce, whose growth has been exponential in recent years, or whether we look at the increased use of digital solutions applied to the internal and external activity of companies, institutions and public bodies.
Therefore, the revision of the eIDAS Regulation will affect the whole of the European business fabric and the functioning of Public Administrations in their relations with companies and citizens, offering new reliable, interoperable and more respectful identification systems for personal data, as well as new trust services that will regulate certain electronic solutions and tools, some of which already exist and others that are more innovative.
